STANDING ON TOP OF THE WORLD

A conversation between co-workers employed at Hunchback Construction, the New York division of the cooperation:

CARLE: “It is so hot here,” he said, “it seems that people move like they’re wearing something heavier than their skin.” He looked at the people walking on the street, dragging their feet, as if carrying their bodies were a ton of lead.

Ricky and Carle were on their lunch break. They were walking to the bench in front of the Waldorf Asteria when the temperature reached the highest heat advisory level of the day.

“Carle,” Ricky said, with a confused look and a scrunched-up nose, “where do you think you are?”

“I don’t know hell, maybe?”, was Carle’s response.

Ricky rolled his eyes at Carle’s smart, sarcastic remark and said, “At least we are contracted out to work at this prestigious place, prompting them to turn around to look at the grand building.”

Carle and Ricky sat down on the bench and began rummaging through their lunch sacks.

“What did Carol pack for your lunch?” Carle asked Ricky. “My favorite,” Ricky said, “a ham and cheese with mustard sub”. Rita had packed a turkey sub with tomato, lettuce, and mayo for Carle. They sat quietly while they took a few bites of their subs.

Ricky spoke up to say that Carol bought tickets to see the play CATS tonight. Carle chimed in to say that he and his wife Rita were going out for a nice dinner.

Both of the guys said they were going to call it an early night after their plans to relax before the next day’s work. Carol and Rita had booked an appointment at the spa the next day. They also made a reservation at LEX YARD for lunch. The ladies would then tour Manhattan on an NYC Statue City Cruise.

Carle exclaimed in astonishment, “I mean, a free stay for a week at the Waldorf?”

“Just because Hunchback Construction needed us to do repairs before a huge event there, plus our wives could join us. “Is this heaven?” Carle asked in astonishment.”

“Nah, just a streak of luck, that’s all,” Ricky mused.
