There we were sitting on the picnic table at the restaurant. Both of us didn’t speak for a while. Until my mom said, “I didn’t expect the memory to hurt this much. However, for years, she held on to hope.” She carried her hope like a fragile thing, but it never broke. Because, in the back of her mind, tucked into a secret place was a reunion of those she loved. Those she didn’t see anymore. Over the years, the farm resumed its normal pace. The people of her town acted like the event, the disappearance of some, didn’t happen there. Yet, my mom couldn’t forget it. That hopeful thinking she had turned into acceptance. She wouldn’t get that reunion she hoped for, so she moved on without it. The year her and my father met was a year of hope. Finally, she would get the reunion she longed for …
My mom asked me for the time. We realized we had a few minutes to talk some more before we had to return to the doctor’s office, so she continued her story.
I kept waiting for the light, not realizing I was the spark.
