Somewhere between staying and leaving, I learned who I was.

…when I realized the key fell out of my pocket, if course I was flabbergasted. I knew I shouldn’t discuss where I found the key. I mean telling anyone where I had been would’ve gotten me in trouble. Somewhere between staying and leaving, the loft, I learned who I was that day: a rotten child who did things I wasn’t supposed to. I felt like this was the reason I injured myself. Somehow, I needed to find a way to redeem myself. All this was going through my head as I was being loaded in the emergency vehicle. I was picked up by my grandparents at the hospital and taken to their house. That is when I noticed him. The guy who worked the family farm for us was tending the crops but had stopped his work and threw a piece of paper out of the tractor window. I was a curious kid so of course I walked the field over to find it. He left behind a note with only three words, “just survive somehow.” I stood there dumbfounded and wondered what that meant. I tucked the paper in my sock hoping it would stay there. At least the paper was hidden until got home and I was safely in my room. The thing was the town was experiencing the disappearance of many of the residents. Evidence of alien abduction was left in notes but none of them were goodbye notes. All the town had to go on was the notes left in various places that had three words. Just survive somehow. The thing was we were changing. The residents of my town were changing.
