Cody and I were part of the few that were left wandering around, helplessly searching for the closest hideout camp. We desperately desired a drink of water, sleep, and maybe a granola bar after a quick wash up. That is if the next hideout we found had a water supply. Our bags were packed with several protein bars we found at the drug store.
Okay, so, this isn’t the latest zombie story of survival of the fittest. This is the story of me and my son on an adventure together. Cody turned 18 last month. My best friend, Rebecca gifted him tickets to an escape camp for his birthday. He chose me to join him. I was more than excited until our adventure turned into an actual fight for survival.
Let me explain myself. The object of the game was to survive. We had to survive somehow while dodging obstacles throughout the field. The maze was the size of a football field. The entrance to the maze was a gated ticket stand where you could buy tickets. The only way out led you through to the parking lot. Since we had our tickets, we were shuffled to the entrance gate to begin our journey. Little did I know that in less than ten minutes, I would lose contact with my son.
Our journey started off successful. We excitedly joined in on the adventure of a lifetime with ten other people. At first, the maze was simple. I actually thought we would accomplish the escape maze, which was a game that was a part of the camp. I was ready to get warm and dry in my cabin for the night.
That’s when I saw them. I don’t know where they came from other than if they were meant to be an act put on by the camp. At least that is what I thought it was until seven of the ten members of the people we came to the camp with disappeared. One by one our friends would disappear with no trace of where they went.
The sound of a stick stepped on startled me so I glanced to see if anyone was behind me. I saw no one but when I looked ahead I couldn’t find Cody. I called for him. When he didn’t reply, I immediately thought, “They’ve got him and now they’re coming for me.
I ran through the maze never stopping to answer the numerous calls from my cell phone when I noticed the caller wasn’t Cody. That’s when I noticed my cabin up ahead. I just had to make it there. I huffed and puffed my way to the door only to find the door wouldn’t lock from the inside. They were trailing behind me. What was I going to do?…
My heart was racing. My hands were freezing cold. Adrenaline was my survival mode. I tried to take a deep breath yet I couldn’t because my chest felt so heavy. I asked myself, “Why is this happening…I can’t believe this is happening right now!” I shoved my back against the door. My feet pressing into the old wooden floor boards. All my hopes were of preventing them from gaining entrance. I felt venerable. Why wasn’t anyone helping me?
All of sudden, I jerked in my bed. I almost fell off. My cat, Monti, meowed and hissed while he jumped from his comfortable position. He had been laying on my chest. My chaotic motion disturbed his slumber. I was disoriented. Wasn’t I trying to complete a maze in an escape camp. You know, my son’s birthday present from Rebecca, my friend.
I squinted my eyes from the sun bearing in them. I… How did I get here?Someone was knocking on my door. I rose from my bed and quickly dressed, then peeped out of the hole on the door, and saw my friend Becca. I sighed a deep breath when I saw her. I felt relief that this was all a dream until she held up tickets. She had tickets to an escape camp.😱
