complete silence

Like I was saying, the day I returned to my grandparents’ house after my hospital visit was the day the farm tender was driving the tractor. He throws a piece of paper out of the tractor window. I was confused about the piece of paper that said, “just survive somehow”, until I looked at the paper again and noticed the fine print. The fine print mentioned a key that was hidden in the rafters of the loft. So now, here I was healing from a broken leg, hopping around the stairs of the loft, looking for the key that I dropped. All of a sudden, the bottom fell out of the sky. Dark clouds loomed over the shelter that was now my refuge. I wasn’t about to head to the house during heavy wind and rain. While I was waiting for the storm to die down, I saw something shining over on the haystack. “The key”, I yelled. A cracking of thunder brightened the darkened sky. The boom that soon followed was, so loud it shook the building. The storm didn’t scare me — the silence after did. When the storm was over, I hopped on my good leg with the key in my pocket. The silence was eerie and not soothing at all. I didn’t hear the chickens clucking or the geese flying overhead which would have been normal for the time of day. There I stood with no farm animals around, no farm tender in the field, or my grandparents when I walked in the house. Just complete silence. Where was everyone?
